Aside from S/M playing a role in his books the Marquis was the thinking man who presented his words to make us do the same. To base all the beauty of his writing on a bit of smut is to miss the point and imprison him into an historical stereotype.
Reading and understanding his use of bondage to symbolize more than the physical is key to liberating the Marquis spirit.
